Consider ice cream: it comes in many different forms, including cones, cups, sundaes, milkshakes, and on a stick. Sure, they’re all different, but they’re all perfectly normal and delicious types of ice cream.

The same is true for penises. Penises can be small or large, curvy or bumpy. Sure, they’re unusual, but they’re all perfectly normal and wonderful types of penises.

It’s reassuring for guys to know that penis size and appearance have little to no effect on function. However, if there is ever a functional issue, there is usually a solution.

Is there such a thing as the average penis size?

There is no such thing as a normal person. The size of the penis varies from person to person. Some men may have a larger penis when it is flaccid, but it does not expand significantly during an erection. Others notice a significant increase in size when transitioning from flaccid to erect.

Penile size has very little impact on a man’s ability to function or conceive. And, contrary to popular belief, there are no safe or scientifically proven methods for increasing penis size. Some of the methods used by men to increase penis size can result in permanent deformation, infection, or loss of the penis.

Should a man be concerned if his penis is curved?

Peyronie’s disease, also known as a curved or crooked penis, is quite common. The penis can move in any direction, including up, down, left, right, and even in a S shape. If a penis has always been curved, it is usually due to the way erectile tissue developed on one side, making that side shorter or longer than the other.

When the condition worsens with age, it’s usually due to scar tissue that formed and tethered one side of the penis, making it shorter than the other. We’re not sure why this scar tissue develops in some men but not others.

Is it necessary to be concerned about bulging blood vessels?

Blood vessels are a normal anatomical variation in men and are usually not cause for concern. How noticeable they are, like penis size, varies from man to man.

The penis is filled with highly pressurized blood during an erection because it has many blood vessels. The blood vessels swell and become more visible during an erection, but they can also be seen on a flaccid penis.

What about a penis that is bumpy or blotchy? Is that typical?

The color of the penis can differ from the color of the skin elsewhere on the body; it can be paler and even appear pink, blue, or purple at times. An erection can also alter one’s appearance. In general, we don’t worry about skin color variation unless something new and consistent appears, such as a red spot, rash, or sore.

Some men are concerned about a bump on their penis. That is normal and could be caused by scar tissue, but it is a good idea to have it checked out. If a man develops a sore or swollen red lesion on his penis, he should see a doctor immediately, especially if it is oozing fluid.

Is a penis hole’s irregular location (hypospadias) a problem?

Photo by Nathan Walker on Unsplash

Hypospadias is a fairly common condition in which the hole is not located at the tip of the penis. Doctors typically detect it in childhood, though mild cases may go unnoticed. It may alter the urinary or ejaculatory stream depending on where it is located.

Consult your urologist if you have hypospadias and are having difficulty conceiving. Your sperm may not be making its way into your vagina.

Is erection or ejaculation pain common?

Your penis should be pleasurable, not painful. If you are in pain, consult a urologist. Sometimes ejaculation pain is caused by a narrowing of the tube or hole at the end of the penis, which increases the pressure and causes discomfort.

Erections that are painful may indicate an underlying condition or injury to the penis.

How prevalent are erection problems?

Between 15 and 30 million men suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). If you are having trouble obtaining or maintaining an erection, consult your doctor. We now know that ED is a good predictor of overall health in men, especially as they get older. Diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure can all cause ED.

ED is commonly associated with stress or anxiety in young, healthy men. Whatever the cause, we have effective ED treatments to get you back on track.

Another type of ED is priapism, which is defined as an erection lasting more than four hours. A prolonged erection is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. If left untreated, priapism can cause tissue damage or deformation of the penis.
